Michael Newey BSc FRICS MCIH has been the Group Chief Executive of Broadland Housing Group since May 2003. The Group comprises a housing association owning and managing in excess of 4,500 homes; a training and employment services charity providing support and guidance to vulnerable people seeking work; and a Property Development Company. When Michael was appointed to Broadland it was a failing organisation with an uncertain future. It is now a very successful organisation focused on improving life opportunities in Norfolk through housing and training with upper quartile performance and tenant satisfaction.
Michael has worked for housing associations since 1997, initially as the Development Director of Flagship Housing Group, followed by two years as the Executive Director for Business Strategy and Performance at Anglia Housing Group. Prior to 1997 Michael worked as a Chartered Surveyor in private practice in London, but was still involved in the housing sector as a non executive board member.
Michael, a graduate in Urban Land Administration qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 1989 and was admitted to the Chartered Institute of Housing as a distinguished housing professional in 2004. He is currently the Vice Chair of the RICS Management Board – a global property profession with over 120,000 members working in over 100 countries. He is also a member of the European Housing Forum in Brussels and was its President from 2002 until 2005.
Between December 2008 and February 2009, Michael undertook a sabbatical secondment as an adviser to the Minister for Housing in Victoria. This role included his preparation of a report providing Minister Wynne with his observations on Victorian Community Housing and the potential for reforms to the sector.
